An infection after surgery can occur without malpractice. The useful timeline starts with the procedure and wound status, then tracks symptoms, follow-up contacts, vital signs, cultures, imaging, antibiotic treatment, drainage or additional surgery, and recovery.

- Operative report and perioperative antibiotic documentation
- Postoperative nursing and wound notes
- Calls or portal messages reporting symptoms
- Culture and laboratory results
- Imaging and infectious-disease consultation when obtained
- Readmission, drainage, debridement, or revision records

- When were infection signs first documented?
- What was the suspected source?
- How quickly did the treatment plan change?
- What additional harm resulted from the infection or any alleged delay?
