Hypoxic-injury research starts with oxygenation and circulation

If a claim alleges injury from inadequate oxygen delivery, collect the records that show when the problem began, how oxygenation or circulation was monitored, what intervention occurred, and when neurologic or organ injury was first documented.

Time-sensitive records may include

  • Pulse oximetry, respiratory, anesthesia, or ventilator records
  • Blood-pressure and resuscitation documentation
  • Blood gas or laboratory results when obtained
  • Neurologic examinations and brain imaging
  • Critical-care and rehabilitation records

Do not assume one mechanism

Low oxygen, low blood flow, underlying disease, cardiac events, anesthesia complications, and other mechanisms can overlap. Qualified expert review is usually needed to identify the medically supported cause and whether the challenged care probably changed the outcome.
